multiple sclerosis

I've just received the devastating news that I have multiple sclerosis. I'm only 35 and have far too much to live for, so I'm determined to fight the onset of the disabling symptoms associated with this disease and would like to explore some of the complementary options for treatment alongside my prescribed medications. What do you recommend?

The cause of MS is not fully understood, but it is thought to be a type of autoimmune disease and may be triggered by a viral infection. It progressively damages the protective myelin sheaths around the nerves, interrupting the brain's messages to rest of the body.

Luckily dietary changes can make a real difference. With any neural disorder it is important to eat the right type of fats because nerve tissue and myelin are made up of 70% fatty acids. A diet rich in beneficial omega 3 fats will help to rebuild healthy nerve tissue whereas saturated, trans and hydrogenated fats will cause further damage. Include plenty of nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables daily, and oily fish 2-3 times per week. Use cold-pressed olive oil for cooking, never polyunsaturated oils like sunflower as these are easily damaged and produce trans fats when heated. Decrease saturated fats, and avoid trans and hydrogenated fats completely, as these block your uptake of beneficial fats.

Some MS sufferers also seem to be sensitive to gluten and/or casein (milk protein), so it would be worth trying a rotation diet, leaving out gluten foods (wheat, rye, barley and oats) and then dairy for a few weeks and noting whether your symptoms improve.

In terms of supplements, it is worth taking flaxseed oil or a fish oil complex such as EyeQ to further boost omega 3s. B12 is also often deficient with MS so try Biocare's B Complex, or Spirulina a rich source of B12 and other nutrients that help boost energy levels. However, as you are on medication do check for compatibility first with your GP.

There are several homeopathic remedies that can help MS but for best results seek treatment from a professional - see the Society of Homeopaths www.homeopathy-soh.org to find one near you. For a nutritional therapist, see www.bant.org.uk
