mosquito bites

I'm in my late 20s and have, in the last couple of years, started to react badly to mosquito bites. They swell up, blister and look infected. How can I lessen the reaction, or better still, stop them from occurring in the first place?

It may sound obvious but the best way to prevent problems from mosquito bites (and the host of diseases that they carry) is to try and avoid getting bitten in the first place. Always wear long sleeves and trousers in the evenings and avoid dark colours which mosquitoes find attractive. As an alternative to DEET try Neem Herbal Outdoor Spray, especially formulated for use against mosquitoes in the notorious Florida Everglades, available from xynergy.co.uk tel 08456 585858.

Mosquitoes are attracted to the body scent of certain people more than others so it is worth trying to modify this by eating liberal amounts of garlic before and during any holiday, and taking a supplement that supplies good levels of vitamin B1 (thiamine) i.e. around 50mg – try Biocare’s B Complex. The homeopathic remedy Caladium 6c is also worth taking daily to reduce bites. Mosquitoes also seem to prefer those of us with a tendency to constipation, so include plenty of fruit, vegetables and wholegrains to encourage regularity, and try Pukka Herb’s Triphala Plus and a mid-strength probiotic such as Biocare’s Bioacidophilus Forte for 2-3 months before you go, switching to Biocare’s Travelguard with added protection against bugs and parasites whilst away.

It’s important to take care of all bites, scratches, cuts and blisters as these can develop into tropical ulcers if left untreated – try Kiwiherb’s antifungal and antibacterial Manuka Paint that is easily applied on the go, also from Xynergy. To help soothe bite reactions try taking the homeopathic remedy Ledum 30c hourly for up to 4 doses, or if blisters develop Cantharis 30c. Staphysagria is another remedy that may be useful for those who are particular mosquito “targets” however it is deep acting and best prescribed by a qualified homeopath, see www.soh-org.uk to find a registered practitioner near you.
